The non-turbo 420a engines are more durable than the turbo 4g63 engines in my opinion. Also 95-96 turbo engines could have crankwalk, also possible for the 97-99 to have crankwalk but more likely for 95-96. And then you would have to replace the whole engine. Most people swap out the 7-bolt with a 6-bolt which is a better engine. Since you are 17 not sure what you can afford. If you can afford it get an eclipse between the years 97-99 that already has a 6-bolt engine in it. You can look on dsmtuners.com under classifieds and sometimes ebay will have them. You could always get a non-turbo such as a GS. Your insurance would be cheaper, you can use regular fuel (instead of premium which a must with turbo), and would less likely give you problems. Check out dsmtuners.com.. you can learn a lot from there.

If you were to buy a 2g DSM (eclipse-talon) get a 1997-1999, the 95 & 96 had a problem called crankwalk. there are many DSM sites to go to for advice, forums, etc. Ive been an avid DSM'er for about 7 years now and there is no other car i would like to drive!!!

If you can afford the problems that most of them have. I have a 97 right now and I still won't get rid of it though. They usually develop a head gasket leak, rear main seal leak, oil pan gasket leak, and valve cover lead about 80,000 miles or so. if you notice that just about all of those were gaskets, your correct. It because they are plastic based rubby type seal/gasket. Luckily your can find parts for them everywhere though. And who knows, you may end up with a good one. Just make sure that if you buy it off the street from someone, they have all of the maintanance paperwork with it and look at the chassis and alot of people like to race them and then they crash.

yeah. just be careful if you are buying a manual shift eclipse. Other than that, they look cool (major factor for a 17 year old), and you can find a vast array of mods for this car (you want to make it an individual, right?) It was my first car, and i didnt have any problems with it. I did a few mods (lowering springs, turbo, exhaust and cosmedics). beautiful car.

I owned a 1994 Mitusbishi Mirage for 10 years, but I've been told that Kias and Hyundais (or however you spell it) are the best right now.
