Socrates firmly believed that there must be a basic principle of right and wrong, . Right is something that is true, and wrong is something that is false(this sentence is from me from what I have learned in Philosophy). Thus he asked again and again: What is good?(which also means 'what is true?'. Seeking truth is important in the attainment of highest good through knowledge.

Socrates believed that the best way for people to live was to focus on self-development rather than the pursuit of material wealth. He always invited others to try to concentrate more on friendships and a sense of true community, for Socrates felt that this was the best way for people to grow together as a populace.

I presume that you are referring to his dialectic method. Socrates asked several people many questions to seek the truth because he believed that by engaging in questions and conversation in such a way that refined one's thinking he would be able to come to knowledge of what was the essence of something. The essence of something may be understood as what is common to all things of that category or type. So, Socrates would ask several people how they defined courage and continue to question them until someone could give him a definition that would explain all instances of courage. For him, to seek the truth about something was to seek what was true about it in all cases. I hope that helps.
