There is relatively no difference between the NIC, ethernet card, and 10/100. A NIC card is a network interface card(NIC). The wire used to conncet the pc to the network use an ethernet type of connector or plug, and the speed at which data travels is 10mpbs or 100mpbs(Mega-Bits Per Second, mbps) Therefore, they all represent relatively the same issue here.

The NIC card must be able to host the ethernet style plug. However, in the past NIC cards used a BNC connector. That conncector looks like the plugs that connect from the VCR to the back of the TV. Today, however, we use Ethernet style connections. which looks like an enlarge telephone plug.
A fan and heatsink is relatively easy to replace on a laptop provided you know what you are doing. If you don't understand ethernet, NIC, and 10/100mbps, you should not try to open that laptop. Take it to a professional. However, if you have or can access an old laptop, you can practice on that.

Farewell.
