Depending on your age, you grow emotionally with experience.

Each new relationship will open new feelings and emotions that you may have experienced with other relationships as well as new emotions you have never experienced.

How you handle each relationship "ups and downs" is the growing emotionally aspect. Such as being dumped...some people do not handle it and become vindictive or hide themselves from family and friends mourning; while others look upon the experience as just that...a wonderful experience never to be forgotten.

When you get to the stage where you are greatful for each experience (whether good or bad) and realize that you can become a victim or become a better person, then you have grown emotionally.

I would say that every new relationship provides different experiences that you need to go through. If you're talking about a romantic relationship then you would learn things such as exactly what traits you are looking for in a partner. I say that every new contact you get, you are changing you're overall view of the world how it is.

They mean you understand more about your failings as a person and your wants from a partner. Like, you might never know that you really can't deal with a republican until you date one and experience it firsthand. And you might learn that when you're PMSing you need to be extra careful not to say mean things with your partner. Or whatever.

Then hopefully you go on to your next relationship and don't date a republican and make a note on your calendar "I am PMSing, so try not to be a b*tch".

I don't think anybody reputable says that. They might say you CAN learn and grow emotionally, but it's up to you to learn something.

I believe that it means that you become wiser about what is important and what really isn't. You become more patient, more understand and a better person to be with.
