I've been revising my manuscript and I've noticed that I need to re-write a couple of things, but I just get so frustrated that I can't finish it. I've taken breaks away from writing it, but this doesn't seem to help. What can I do to finish my manuscript without getting irritated?

You definitely need a break from it. Set it aside and start writing something completely different until you regain some perspective. Even Stephen King sets his books-in-progress aside for up to six months before coming back to them to work on revisions. You're going to burn out on it if you don't step back.

Writing can be a frustrating experience, especially during revisions. Stepping back from the work and redirecting your creative energies will help keep you fresh and keep from going crazy. Best wishes!

Ha! not get frustrated? If you're to that point the frustration will grow if anything. However, what I normally do is go write at a place new and interesting. That way, if I start to get a little irritated, I can focus on the new environment. For myself, the best place to write is on the train going back and forth between Dallas and Fort Worth until the train stops for the night. For you maybe it's a park, on the roof of your house, by a stream, in a closet, the possibilities are endless. If you find the frustration doesn't go away, put the novel down for a while and work on another project. When the time comes to pick it back up again, you'll know.

First, you need to objectively look at the manuscript and determine if it SHOULD be completed! There is nothing wrong with deciding a story just doesn't work, and moving on to work on something else. Sometimes we get fixating on a particular project, and see it as a personal failure if we don't finish it. But good writers know sometimes you need to be willing to walk away.

I have a fantasy novel that I started. While the first chapter came out quickly, and I've got a firm idea of where the story is going, I can't segue into the second chapter in a way I am happy. So I have moved on to other projects. When the story is ready to be written, I'll go back to it. But fixating on a specific project will just stifle you, and you won't be happy with the end result.

Perhaps you didn't formulate your story appropriately. I of course don't know, but just throwing it out here. A lot of people write and write without knowing where they're going and then when they get to the end it doesn't really make much sense and they get frustrated as they try to put lipstick on a pig.

You might want to review your controlling idea and story arc as well as the scenes, sequences, and acts and see if they all work well. If they don't, then you might want to rewrite while knowing that. That what drafts are for.

I agree with Billy Bob, just write the book and when you discover you need to re-write something...makes notes of reference to make the changes but don't focus on that. Finish the book then go back and change as needed. Good Luck!
