During the sleep cycle, the average male has an erection approximately every 90 minutes or so (regardless of whether he is having a sexually-themed dream). Sometimes you're bound to wake up with one.
Those who find they never awaken with "morning wood" may actually have medical conditions predisposing them toward erectile dysfunction.

The truth is, it's a biological diagnostic, for lack of a better term. The male body will, during sleep, runs a series of tests of it's systems, if you will. One of the those tests is the penile blood flow. It usually occurs (I believe) during the latter part of the sleep cycle. It is purely a biological redundancy. Yes, it can also mean that the male requires to urinate, as when an erection occurs, the urethra is closed off from the bladder.

Actually, studies have shown that people of both genders commonly enter a state of sexual arousal during REM sleep, regardless of what the dreams are about. It's just obvious with guys since there's visible evidence, as it were. Having to pee also influences it.

Well we as guys wake up with them because we either have to go to the bathroom or just because it is the way our body was made and what it is supposed to do.

I heard it was because testosterone levels are highest when a man wakes up. Us chicks get sexually aroused and hornier during times when our hormones fluctuate. Guys hormones fluctuate as well. Also many men have to pee when they wake up and having to pee can cause an erection. I give thumbs up to men having erections.

I don't know (thought a couple fo the answers are very impressive) but it sure makes it difficult to pee. You have to bend it down in the most uncomfortable position!!!

I don't. Now if I stay in bed long enough to conjure up a sexual image/situation then I may feel aroused. I don't; however, awaken with this feeling naturally.
