Normally, you should hold the items for 30 days, after that it is fair game unless you had some type of agreement with him to hold his stuff. If you dont want the stuff or dont have room for it, donate it to charity or sell it. Or if they are good movies and stuff, send it to me, j/k. If you have had the stuff for a long time it is your to do with as you please.

As long as you make an attempt (and document it) to let him know that you can't take his things with you, you are under NO obligation to take his things. You can either donate them to charity or toss them in a dumpster. The fact that he doesn't live in the same state of you has no bearing on it. If he WANTED his things to begin with he should have made other arrangements than to leave them with you.
I had a room mate briefly, roommate took off leaving most of his belongings, I moved 6 months later, consulted a lawyer about his things was told to throw them away. I gave him ample time to get them, in fact he would call me weekly saying he was coming to pick them up "next week"...next week never came...They're in a land fill somewhere now.

To cover yourself, send him an email giving him seven days to contact you about these items. Print a copy of this email to hold onto. Finally, take the items to a Goodwill center and get a receipt for the items donation. Hang onto the receipt and the email copies in the event that to comes back to haunt you.

I would consider sending him a certified letter stating he has 30 days to claim the stuff, and if he does not respond or come and get it, that you will be forced to dispose of it in whatever way you see fit. It is a good idea to notify him with a paper trail if possible so if he tries to sue you later you have evidence that you served him the letter, or at least tried to find him and serve him.

You are not responsible for anything he left when you broke up. Take what you can use and either donate or sell the rest or just throw it away.

Time limit depends on where you live. Call the police station to ask how long before it's considered abandoned property.

Give him one last call and tell him he has to pick them up by Friday or you are donating his stuff to the thrift store. If he doesn't make arrangements to get the stuff then donate it.

Good luck!

If you've told him to get his stuff I would give it a max. of six months. If you haven't...a year and if you don't hear from him he didn't want it that bad for it to be gone so long. Junk it.
