Pure elemental sodium is quite rare on Earth. It is much too reactive to stay unbound under normal conditions. However, sodium in the form of various chemical compounds is quite common indeed.

Elemental sodium or sodium atoms are not found in nature. Sodium atoms react vigorously with many other materials, notably oxygen and water, which are very common in nature.
After the sodium atoms react, you have sodium ions (within the compounds that are formed by the reactions).
Sodium ions have stable electron structures and are VERY common. Sodium atoms have unstable electron structures and are not found in nature.

You mean sodium as a pure element of course. sodium is a very unstable element and wants to react to change its form to something more stable like table salt. sodium ignites in air and must be contained in some kind of oil ( i can't remember quite what now) so if stays in its elemental form.

The element is rare; pretty-much every living thing needs some to survive. But finding it by itself is rare, because usually it has bonded with something.

Sodium is quite common considering that it is in every drop of water in the oceans.
