I live in a two-floor townhouse, where the family room, kitchen, living room, all bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms have windows (bathrooms have small, shaded windows) the only place with no windows is beneath the stairs, in the closet. (1st floor), but the stairs turn in a circle, as they spread to the 2nd floor. the main entrance is like 1 inch from the stairs. if i would open the door, then I wouldn't be able to get upstairs.
i know that i should stay on the 1st floor, away from windows; and cover my head with something.
there is no basement here, so what can i do.
would it be wise to get in the car and drive away as fast as i can, or what?

If there is a watch in your area... that means that the conditions are favorable for a tornado this means stay alert! ... if there is a warning... that means one has been seen on radar... or on the ground...a warning means take cover!!! NEVER get in you car.... you are not safe in you car! Tornado's are unpredictable and you may not be able to judge the direction of the storm

if you have no basement or cellar then get to the lowest level of your house..and you want to go to a room with interior walls... for most people this is a hallway...or bathroom...some people like to shield themselves with pillows, mattress or something that might cushion falling debris. If you live in a area that is prone to tornado's then I would say to invest in a weather radio... this will alert you to any warnings that are in your area... which is helpful... when they come in the middle of the night.

Hope this helps

stay alert... stay safe!

Okay whatever you do do not get in your car and try to outrun the tornado you will never make it! If you have time and a warning is in there area it is best to seek a local Tornado shelter if you have no place in your home. If there is no time and a tornado is on the way here are some options. Is there a closet on the first floor? If so go into it! No windows small space it will work. Your stairs sound like a good option, here in tornado alley they teach us that the stairs are a great protection from tornado's. Also the bathroom even though it has a small window is not a bad place get into the bath tub, lay low and cover your head and back of the neck with your hands, bathtubs are good because they are held on with the plumbing! If you happen to be outside when the tornado comes look for a ditch, get in it and cover head and neck with hands! I hope this helps, please never try to outrun the tornado they change paths without warning and are very hard to judge!

Do not get in the car and try to drive away from the tornado. They are very unpredictable and can turn at any time. It seems like you really do know where you need to be. Under the stairs in the closet is the best place. A first floor bathroom is also a good place even if it has a small shaded window. Bring a blanket, towel, big pillow to throw over yourself if glass happens to fly. The best reason to be in a bathroom is because you are close to the plumbing pipes that go far down in the ground. Just like in the movie 'Twister' you could tie yourself to an exposed pipe. Bring a radio with you wherever you go. I know that the news is scary with the school in Alabama and such, but it is highly unlikely that most of us will need to take drastic measures. Stay calm.

The safest spot would be under the stairs, the stairs are built well because they will take a lifetime of pounding.

safest is a general term in this case because even if you do everything right, you still can be killed or seriously injured

the safest spot in underground in a storm shelter

Driving away from a tornado is not recomended unless you have knowledge of how storms behave. The main reason why its not smart to drive is because if too many people do this, they clog the roads and then become sitting ducks in one of the worst possible spots durning a tornado

a tornado watch means there is the possibilty of a tornado, pay attention to weather reports ect. just because there is a watch dosent mean there is going to be a tornado.

Getting into the car and driving is a bad idea unless you do it ahead of time before the tornado gets there. I suggest getting into a closet or bathtub on the first floor if at all possible. Aren't there any "safe places" in your town? Maybe a church or something that has a basement? It is good to plan ahead so that when the time comes you will have a plan. Better to be safe than sorry. I have been in a couple of tornadoes.

You should go in the closet and if there is room you should take your mattress or some large pillows and put them over your head. Just because there is a tornado watch doesn't mean that there will be a tornado. When there is a tornado warning is the time to take cover. You may want to check with your neighbors and see if there is public shelter in your area.
