I want her on my plan as soon as possible for a possible minor emergency surgery. I want to talk about our current situation but I'm afraid it can bite me in the butt later. Should I just put her on without mentioning her condition and wait for the policy to kick in?

thanks in advance

You will not be able to add her to your insurance until you are married. When you do have her added they will want some form of prrof, like a copy of your marriage license. If the procedure she needs to have done is for a pre-existing condition the insurance company will kick it back to you, the information regarding the pre-existing condition will be contained in her medical records.

You can't. For exactly the reason raised by this situation. Insurance companies (and your employer, if they are paying part of the premiums) do not want people to add people to insurance in order to get operations. While this may be your fiancee, what stops a dishonest person from claiming a fiancee, when it's really just someone who's trying to get some insurance.

If this is this severe, get married sooner rather than later. If it's really an emergency, surely it's worth it to go down to city hall, today, and tie the knot.

i am hr in a small company and depending on the policy if you are financially responsible for each other you may be able to add her now as a domestic partner (if allowed by ins and employer) you can have her added with a further effective date to your weddign day or the 1st of the next month. if she doesnot currently have insurance, you ins might consider it a pre existing condition and not cover the surgery. i would check with you hr and have them check with ins co.

I'm not sure if they will let you add her to your policy if you're not married. However, some organizations provide coverage for "significant others", so you may be able to add her. If the surgery can wait I would wait until she is covered. Even if you add her it could take like 30 days before it would kick in for her.
