my contractions still are very far apart and i haven't bothered timing them to see if they are regular but, since bedtime last night my contractions have been feeling different (less pressure feeling and more painful around the hips) still feel the tightening though obviously, but i was wondering could this be early labour or am i getting to excited, im 41 weeks today.. how soon after feeling this way did you go into labour, having an average time frame may help me manage my time better thanks so much.. I hope this is it!

You can look for other signs to go with your contractions to tell how far along you are.

1. Breaking of the mucus 'plug' and a slight discharge.

2. Baby is in final delivery position.

3. Contractions growing consistently stronger.

4. Effacement of 3 or more centimeters signals imminent birth.

5. Water breaks.

My labor started at about midnight, At 8 am, I went to the hospital with contractions still 45 minutes apart, the water broke at noon and the baby was born at 1 pm.

Everyone's experinece is different, but this is the general path.

To answerer Nora...effacement is measured in percentages, dilation is measured in centimeters. They are two totally different things and can occur apart from one another.

Now to answer the question.... if you felt enough pain to think that you were in true labor you would have begun timing them...I wouldn't go to L&D just yet...you can't even tell them how far apart they are or how long they're lasting!!! Real labor contractions will become longer stronger and closer together in a pattern that intensifies. BH's are felt mostly in your front as a tightening feeling in your front, labor begins like menstrual cramps, with most of the pain in your back that radiates around to the front. Longer stronger closer together=real labor.

I would say this is definitely early labor. I started having these contractions the last week or so of my pregnancies. To speed things along I used Castor oil to induce with my last one. It took just a few hours to go into active labor after that. Some less aggressive means would be to go walking, play with your nipples (this sounds weird but it helps your body to release oxytocin which is what it needs to go into labor), have sex without a condom (Only if you are monogamous! The man's sperm has prostaglandins in it which will help to soften your cervix), and reach an orgasm (the uterus contracts when a woman reaches climax). Make sure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Good luck!

is this your first baby? new moms and labor act very different than multiple ones. watch for a mucus plug about 3 days before "real"labor and the contractions will be more evenly timed and with longer duration and intensity.you probably have about 5-7 days or so to wait yet. good luck! signed pattycake (retired RN .o.b.g.y.n.)

Contractions are around the hips area, a sqeezing or tightening. I think you are having contractions. Start timing them or just call your Local hospital where you plan to deliver and ask the labor and delivery nurses. They are ALWAYS helpful!

I had very regular contractions like you describe, went to see the doctor for my regular exam. He said not yet, but don't go too far. That night my water broke and my son was born very quickly afterwards.
