In days past people would advertise their preferences by a handkerchief of some colour in a back pocket

check out the link (esp for Wide Awake )

It means that someone is stuck in the scene 20-30 years ago, when people communicated with their posteriors instead using conversation.

In this day and age we talk about what we want or don't want. It's much more efficient.

I'm sure someone will post a link to these outdated hanky codes. Just remember, communication will go a lot further than apparel.

Agreed. The "hanky code" isn't really something you see anymore, and these days it's mostly good as joke fodder among folks in-the-know (e.g., laughing at a straight dude with a yellow hanky in his back left pocket).

Thank heavens we can now post our preferences and kinks online, and connect with other like-minded individuals through message boards, profiles, email, and IM instead.

Anyway, here is another link to what you asked for: http://alt.xmission.com/~trevin/hanky.html

I thought is was more than about sex...hmm.
The answer were still a relief. I first had an image of gay street gangs wearing bandannas and battling the crips and bloods for controls of the ghettoes...whew what a releif.

PS: What 'straight' dude would ever use a yellow hanky?

You Asked so here they come.

First, they signal Top or Bottom depending on what side they are worn. Right for Bottom, Left for Top.

Secondly, the colours tell someone what you want or like to do:

Dark Blue -- Intercourse
Light Blue -- Oral
Coma -- into Military
Black -- Into S/M

I could go on, but hopefully you get the picture. Now having posted this, as Wide Awake says, it's not used much anymore but you did ask.

Business cards from The Leather Rack in Washington DC also used to include this information. :)
