Check out the website below and of course check with your doctor. Most medications fall into a particular "Lactation Risk Category". You want to stick with an L1 or L2 to be safe, although if you really need it an L3 is okay. I also put a link at the bottom for Lactation Risk Categories to help you understand it better. I currently take Rhinocort (nasal spray) while breastfeeding, and I took Nasonex while I was pregnant. The nasal sprays tend to be pretty safe, but make sure you do your homework to be sure -- don't just take your doctor's word for it as many doctors are NOT well-educated about current research about breastfeeding (in my experience). Good luck!

I would say absolutly no. There are certain chemicals in the medication that might interfear with your baby's immune system. Right now when you're breastfeeding, you're transfering elements into your baby's immune system from yours. That can be very helpful to the baby because it will help streanthen it. When you get sick, (i.e. chicken pox ect.) you're body recongnizes the sickness so it raises it's defence system so that if your body is introduced to the sickness again, you won't get sick, but with some sicknesses (i.e. the common cold) your body is tricked into thinking that the sickness is suppose to be there. That's why you don't just have a cold once so when you breastfeed, all of that is transfered into your baby's immune system and it makes it stronger to be able to fight off more earlier in life, but when you introduce medications, that could hender what your body is doing or even reverse it so I would say no, don't take allergy meds while breastfeeding.

I would definitely call your doctor to see what medications they suggest. If you want to check the safety of any meds that you have taken in the past, you can always go to www.safefetus.com , they list how safe meds are for pregnancy, but also during breastfeeding.
