I think a lot of times, the first person to respond, will have a really good answer, and the people that answer after that, can't compare to it! That's when you get the answers that are short or glib or yes/no, just because the answerer is already there, and might as well snag 2 points.
Personally, if I click on a question, and there's already a very good answer, I'll just give a thumbs up, and move on.

I don't do it, but now that you mention it, I don't like that idea!
Funny though, one of the undecided questions I answered I had the first answer and I bet I won't get best answer!

Yap, most just do it for the points which lead some askers to lament that the chosen best answer by voters was not even an answer to what was asked.
