Please People, she is turning 77 and is in a wheel chair. So no tennis rackets or bicycles.

A lap robe. I'm only 55 and find myself getting cold all the time. I can only imagine how much colder I would be confined to a wheelchair and not able to move to generate heat.

You could also try shopping at any of the many adaptive apparel sites online...

Here's something creative that will be appreciated and you will have fun doing:

Make up a crossword puzzle and have all the hints be personal inside moments and jokes that only you two would know about. Put it on a poster board and add some clipart and some pictures to it!

The crossword puzzle could be time consuming and a bit frustrating ... you could do the same idea with a WORDSEARCH or WORDFIND puzzle.

Put your computer skills to work! Use Excel, get clipart from Yahoo Images Search, copy them, and reformat them, use a gluestick to put on posterboard.

Use graph paper, and pictures from magazines if you are not as good on the computer, and it will give it more of a homemade feeling.

How about... a pedicure; a massage; a great movie; a good book; a day trip to someplace fun. Just because she is in a wheel chair does not mean that she should be cooped up and that she hates to have fun. Take her out to a fancy lunch and get her hair done and both of you get pedicures. Walk with her across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Stationary is always good.

I would always send my grandmother a box of computer created postcards that already had her address and a stamp on them. (I suppose you could also buy note cards or post cards from the store.) I would create them myself on my computer with the "picture side" being a favorite poem of hers with maybe a pic or two (birds, etc.) also on it.

She LOVED that!! When any birthday or Christmas came around, that's what she would always ask for. No fuss, or looking for stamps. All she had to do was write on it and put on an address and drop it in her mailbox.

Some good carboard picture books, good toys for her age such as Fischer Price, a pair of teeshirts that says if you think I am cute, you should see my mom, my auntie or maybe a print for her bedroom wall. Also, maybe you could just buy it now and send it to her parents now, for next month. It might be safer to see what you are buying, especially with clothes. Good luck.

Take her to her favorite restaurant or buy her a gift card/certificate there if you can't. Older people don't like getting "stuff"- it just accumulates into a mess.

Get her a picture book (a coffee table book) of the last 100 yrs. At 77, all she really has is memories. Let her relive them to you as she thumbs through the book.

Smaller fleece lap blanket. A full size blanket is too heavy and big, but the fleece are a nice price, wash easily and are not too heavy on sore legs.

Maybe stamps if she still corresponds with family and friends.
Any food type things that she likes--honey, jelly.
Maybe a framed picture of grandchildren or other family members.
