i have just started working for a charity in a london office. the thing is that i am only on a one year fixed term contract with them. when i started work with them they didn't give me any induction training and didn't ask me for my p45 to give to them. i am begining to suspect that something doesn't seem right. do i seem silly or am i being right in that. what rights do i have as a fixed term employee?

Full employment rights are acquired after 12 months employment. This means that even if the contract says 'fixed term', the employer still has to find a legal means of dismissing the contract...such as disciplinary matters, redundancy or whatever.

The possibilities are endless...which is why wise people join trade unions and don't have to rely on the lottery of yahoo answers!!

They sound a bit disorganised - not unusual for the voluntary sector - although there is no excuse!
Ask your manager to whom you should give your P45 - s/he is probably v overworked and has forgotten to ask. Then, I would gently say that you would appreciate knowing where you fit in to the organisation/what your colleasgues do - something like that - and could they possibly arrange a short induction coupple of days for you.
When you have been in the vol sector for 20 years, you will learn to deal with our little ways! Enjoy the experience.
Note to Harry J - the voluntary sector employs about the same number of people as the agricultural industry in the UK.
