How about one of those people who pick up dead animals on the side of the road, or a professional fisherman, or that person who takes your ticket at movie theaters, or the person who sells hot-dogs at a ball game.

If you still enjoy working around food, how about applying for a job at a nice restaurant for either server or busperson. If you don't really care about working with food, how about office work. If you have typing or date entry skills, perhaps there are some offices that are pretty big in size where they need someone to do clerical work such as data entry, filing, faxing documents.
Someone mentioned going to a couple temporary agencies and that sounds like a great idea being able to get one's feet wet in different tyes of jobs.
In the meantime of getting a job, how about looking into some type of career training whether it be at a vocational-technical school or community college. It can only open up more doors for you and make you more marketable as an applicant for the competitive world of work :) And please realize that government jobs are quite scarce these days. My friend's father works for the government, and he has said that while the benefits are terrific, the jobs are just not available and when they are, quite competitive as well.

I did the supermarket thing too...for 2 years. Try going to work for a temp agency. I did that for 2 - 3 years until I went back to school. Doing temp work you'll meet alot of different people and work in different locations. If you have never worked in an office before this can be the perfect way to get some experience.

Take a long shower and just think. One study has proved that hot water on the scalp and skin affects nerves in a certain way that sends signals to the brain to boost your creative thinking skills. I know I have always gotten my best ideas in the shower. If it's coming up with a completely new book idea then i've got no idea. Ideas just come to me, and I have no clue how to "make" them come. If you're in the process of writing a book and got writer's block, then I would suggest picking a past scene that you wrote really well and explore another aspect of it. Maybe write it from a different person's perspective, using a lot of descriptive language. Or describe the landscape of your world from the point of view of the main character. Hope this helps! Best of luck!

Why not apply to be a holiday rep? You will get to live in a different country, it's hard work but completely different to anything in the UK. If you don't like it you could always return to the UK and go back to working in a supermarket, at least you'll have an interesting conversation to tell around the lunch table.

Get your CV typed up and distribute it to the 500 top companies to work for.... you're gonna get a response from at least one!
Think about what you're good at and what you enjoy - there's no point doing a job you hate considering most of your life is spent at work.
I've done tonz of stuff from shops/supermarkets to pharmacuetical warehouse work/forklift truck driving through to cash office and banking. It's good to shop around so try temping...
