Its all to do with script writing. You want people to meet others to make the plot move along. Brits meet other Brits in pubs.
Brits don't much go to other peoples houses, why would they when they can meet at a pub instead? Sienfeld had Kramer breaking in his door every 5 minutes. Friends had people meeting in a coffee shop. You write scripts to cultural norms.
Nicaraguans have TV situations where everyone is related so people are constantly dropping in and having dinner. They drink a lot here - but not in bars. They show some drinking because another issue is what do those actors do with their hands while they are talking? How do you move actors around a set? "I'll refill your glass" "Let me get you another".
Latin Americans move their hands around a lot when they speak, Brits don't. Stuff a drink in each actors hand and problem solved.

Well how many soaps do you see without a pub? Eastenders have one, Corination Street has one, so does Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. The list goes on.

Because even if you own a fruit and veg stall that only occasionally sells a couple of apples, and you can leave it 95% of the time for someone (in fact anyone) to look after, and you are facing financial ruin and down to your last fiver, you can always afford a pint..!! It is apparantly the British way..!!

Because it's the only aspect of soaps that is anywhere near true to real life.

its in their culture. i've watched "time team" - a program about searching for archeology discoveries.
the team many times is seen sitting at the table at a pub having a social drink while they discuss the next thing to do.
