There are two different types of tests. One is a fasting test (what you probably took) and the other is non-fasting. For the non-fasting test, she can eat normally, but try to avoid eating too much sugar in the hours before the test.

Unless the doctor specifies, fasting before a glucose test it not always necessary. The glucose test is to see if a pregnant woman is having an instance of gestational diabetes. Unless there is a family history, generally the glucose test will be rated "random", which means you are to eat and drink normally.
Usually, a doctor will only want a fasting glucose test if he/she suspects the patient is suffering from gestational diabetes. (baby is much larger than expected for the due date, frequent urination, and a certain protein showing up from routine testing). The reason for the fasting is to show the doctor how the body reacts when there is no sugar coming in to the body.
I hope this clears it up!

she probably misunderstood her doctor. You are not aloud to eat for several hours befor drinking the glucose fluid. My doctor told me not to eat befor my appointment (it was at 1pm) so i wasnt aloud to eat from the time i woke up until after my appointment.
Your not suposed to eat or drink anything except a little bit of water because anything in your system will effect the results of the test. Tell her to call her doctor and ask them about it because im pretty sure she just misunderstood what he said. I was always told that if you eat then drink the glucose fluid and go threw with the test and the results arent normal they will ask if you ate or drank anything and then have you retest. If you did eat and told them you didnt you will be misdiagnosed and that will cause many problems so make sure she calls her doctor.

There are different types of glucose tests that can be done. Some are done by drawing the blood, which is a really good test as it can detect glucose attached to the red blood cells for the last three months or the fasting test where you drink bottles of glucose and then they take your blood by needle every hour for a couple of hours. Depending on which one they are doing will depend on whether or not she will have to fast. She may want to call her Dr back to make sure.

don't eat or drink anything after midnight and go in first thing in the morning . They will give you a drink to take, after that is finished you have to wait 1 hour and then they will do the blood work. this is the procedure. done it many times. The doctor wasn't thinking. They will not be able to get an accurate reading if you eat something because of how different foods turn into different things for your body. So don't eat anything.

I know that for a glucose test the only thing that you are allowed to have is water and nothing else eight hours prior to the test, maybe your friend is having another kind of test done or perhaps she misunderstood her doctor ,it would be best to phone her doctor's office and double check !

Fasting befpre doing a glucose test can make the test inaccurate - plus I can't think of a single preg woman that can go 8 hours w/o food. I ate normally the day I had my test. They test your blood before they pump you full of sugar to see how your body reacts to it - 50 grams of sugar is quite a bit for a body to process and they want to make sure your body can break all of that down with no problem. If your friend's doc told her she could eat, have her eat what she normally does.

Sometime foods can alter the results of the test. Your not suppose to eat 8 hours before the test or drink anything other than water. So if she does it her results are possibly going to be wrong.

I just scheduled my glucose test and neither my doctor or the appointment setter said anything about eating to me. I didn't receive any instructions on food the last time I had one done either.
