I agree with Wide Awake that the word is PRESERVE, but I think that it has only come to mean that with the attention given to game preserves, etc; but it can certainly be used in the way you have stated. A preserve is something put aside, or reserved for a specific purpose. It fits, alright!

The only English word that fits this pattern is "preserve," which doesn't really fit your definition, unless you mean like in a "game preserve." Are you sure you have the letters correct?

The first word I thought of was "environment," but I know that is not eight letters.
