NO they are NOT the same. Consult the manuel that came with the computer or go to Hardware Device and see if it is listed. Remember that the CD Tray IS NOT a Cup Holder. hehehehehe

Quickest way is to look at the front of the CD/DVD drive's drawer. It'll say DVD-R/RW if it is a DVD writer.
Or, right-click My Computer, Select Properties, Click the Hardware tab, click the Device Manager button. Click the plus + sign in front of DVD/CD-Rom drives and see what it says.

Go to start, then go to " My computer"
You should see two drives, one that says" Local Disk C: another one says whether CD drive or CD RW, or DVD RW drive...
If your drive says CD RW, then it can burn songs. If it says DVD RW, then it can burn both songs Movies, while a regular CD drive can ONLY play songs.

take a look at out side of the drive you put the CD's into..
if it is marked:
1: CDRW ..it only burns CD's
2: DVD ROM / CDRW reads both DVD's and CD's ..But only burns CD's
3: DVD ROM / DVD RW / CD read write...it does it all.
or right click my computer / go to system properties, click on hard ware, then device manager..this list everything in your computer...click on DVD/CD-ROM drives and it will list what you have CDRW and /or DVDRW

DvD burners and CD burners are completely different.
If yuor computer has a DVD burner already in it, it will say "DVD writer/DVD reader"

If so, you'll see 'DVD Writer' on the front of the drive.
