Unless GM now stands for Great Moron, Forbes.com has it all wrong. Did McHale edge out the great Matt Millen for the honors? Other than drafting Kevin Garnett, what has he done to HELP the Timberwolves? Has Forbes forgotten the Joe Smith incident? The move cost the Timberwolves three first round draft picks and $3.5 million. In those three drafts, players such as Jason Richardson, Richard Jefferson, Tony Parker, Amare Stoudamire were drafted. When he finally got to pick again in 2003, he wisely drafted Ndudi Ebi with his first round pick. He got rid of Sam Cassell when he still had some game left and overpaid for journeyman point guard Mike James. He has done nothing to complement his only brilliant move in 1995, when he drafted K.G. No one has been put around him. The 2003-04 season had some players around Garnett, like Cassell and Sprewell. They were gone soon after. He has signed poorly and drafted even worse. I guess Forbes list for top sports GM's is:
1) Kevin McHale, Minnesota Timberwolves
2) Matt Millen, Detroit Lions
3) Isaiah Thomas, New York Knicks
4) Billy King, Philadelphia 76ers
5) Bob Babcock, Toronto Raptors
Forbes knows business, but they don't know smack about sports.

I think the Memphis GM was following orders to dump salaries so he is probably better than McHale. At least he got his job because he's a smart guy. McHale got his because he was a good ball player. The great athletes, with a few exceptions (West for one) are not usually the best executives (Jordan).

I can't...I mean, I am Celtics fan...Maybe Malcom Forbes is too...What they have been able to do is be one of the teams in the midwest that has to be dealt with since Jordan retired...but I think calling him the best GM in sports is a stretch...I would think that would have to go to the Boston Red Sox GM, Theo Epstein, for getting the players that ended the curse a couple years ago, or the New England Patriots GM for turning them into the NFL dynasty of the present...

Consider the source. You're getting that information from an organization which knows the Bull Market, not the Chicago Bulls. In terms of basketball GM's- Joe Dumars in Detroit is the best.

April Fools?
He got Kevin Garnett. And Randy Foye. Made a decent move for Blount and Davis.
Outside of those few moves, he's terrible. Firing Saunders and the other guy, as well as signing Mike James and the whole Joe Smith fiasco were not good moves.

Must be because of the multiple titles the Timberwolves have won under his leadership. Oh wait....I'm getting reality confused with that alternate universe again.

Dunno, but he was my favorite basketball player of all time, that's certain.
He's a smart guy, and he no doubt learned a lot about team management while under the wing of Red Auerbach, who was, without a doubt, the best GM ever in the NBA.
