Engine seems to be loosing water from area near where cambelt cover is. but only loses it after engine cools down. And it isnt a great deal lost either, just a damp patch appears on the tarmac outside the house. I've been told it could be the water pump seals, or even the bush inside the water pump. I have only just had the cambelt changed at 100,000 miles, on its third belt now but just curoius to know if anyone knows what the problem is exactly, can I cure it and if so do i need to change the cambelt yet again... Many thanks Lee G

It's almost definately the o-ring seal on the water pump, or even the water pump itself mate. Replacement part is around £25-35 from a motor factors plus fitment. If you are in the warwickshire area, my mate is an ex rover tech who now works for himself. Email marcbridger@hotmail.com. If not, then it's not difficult to replace as long as you've got a haynes manual to hand. Oh, and no, don't bother replacing the belt again....it can be removed and replaced without damaging it.

Hope this helps.

Hi

Your leak is the water pump and the only fix is a new pump. You will not need to renew the belt if it is fairly new but I always do as a precaution.

DO NOT PUT RAD WELD IN A ROVER K SERIES!!! They run far too hot as it is at the best of times which is why they eat head gaskets and the thermostat is right at the back of the engine. The engine has far too many small and easily blocked waterways and you will cause terminal damage if you add rad weld to the coolant.

I always advise on a water pump when I change a cambelt on a K series because they are a popular failure and they are as cheap as chips.

Also, you should ALWAYS have the tensioner renewed at the same time as the belt because it is under just as much stress as the belt.

If the tensioner wasn't renewed along with the belt then I would have a full belt and tensioner kit fitted along with the pump.

I expect the tensioner was replaced because it is common practise these days.

Cheers

Geordie

that would be your water pump worn out. K series engines are notorious for head gasket problems, ie, once they have one they can't be fixed for any period of time, they just keep blowing again and again. Get the pump replaced ASAP before it suddenly decides to spit all its water out when you least expect it and then ruin the engine. also get the cambelt replaced as it'll become damaged in the removal process. I'd suggest the cause of the problem, as you've just had a new belt, is overtighening of the belt which has worn the pump out. there are tensioning settings for these things which arent just there to give the chap writing the book on the car some padding, make sure they guy fitting it knows what he's doing.

DO NOT PUT RAD WELD IN THAT ENGINE! lol it has too many small waterways that block very easily, the water pumps are prone to leaking after a cambelt change as it is the change in belt tension that causes the leak, The garage that changed your belt should have advised you to change the £23 water pump at the same time as it is a really common problem! only way round it is to change the pump sorry

You need to get the water pump removed and inspected to see if the o rings have failed. 100,000 miles would be about right for a new water pump. Try and get both the pump and the cam belt changed at the same time. You need to get this sorted asap as the rover engine is very susceptible to over heating and if the head gasket goes it will be a very expensive repair (Around £700)

use a radiator pressure tester at about 15 to 20 psi to pressurise the cooling system this will allow you to see where the leakage is occuring. the water pump is the prime suspect and the garage that changed the cambelt should have peformed this test and reported it's condition to you. but you need to eliminate other possible causes such as the head gasket or hoses.

Sounds like your water pump, why not change it yourself and learn a skill, my son and me just changed the Cambelt and water pump on his Rover 214, I am into making youtube videos at the moment and did a crude video during this. I am hoping that it may be of some use to others or give people the confidence to try it themselves, as this was the first time for my son. It's on youtube here:

B. It seemed like the Tigers were overmatched against the Rangers, well let's be specific, against Nelson Cruz. The man is working on overtaking Kinsler and Hamilton as the stars of Texas.
