i've had cingular for about 4 years now and recommend them. i tried sprint and verizon briefly before I had cingular and had HORRIBLE problems with both companies.
as for phones, I'd say go for any of the sony ericsons-i've had the best experience with them. i just got the sony ericson w300i and so far, it's worked really well. i know other people who have had this phone longer and highly recommended it to me since it was time for me to upgrade phones, which is why i got this particular one. you have to get the w300i online though, they don't offer it in the stores. plus, online, you can often get better deals anyways.
yes, you can check emails, send IM, download music, take pics, record video and sounds, etc on the w300i.

it really comes down on what do you want on a phone. the cellphone isn't just a phone anymore it have revolve to a personal device with lots function.
2 important feature must have is bluetooth and speakerphone, they come really handy when you need them. most cingular phone have speakerphone so that's not a big thing you need to worry.
my suggestion:
good and cheap phone: cingualr samsung C417 ( 3 color to chose )
reason i chose this phone is because it's Quadband ( gsm 850/900/1800/1900 ), bluetooth, and slim design. Samsung phone is very easy to use and very reliable.
better: samsung a707 ( 3 color to chose )
reason i chose this phone is because it have 3G connection and it will offer you the fastest speed for video streaming. other then that it have 2.0 mega pixel, best camera in all cingualr phone.
price isn't so expensive too. I would really consider this phone.

Right now Motorola's Razr and Rizr are the most convenient. The Rizr Z3 is newer and it's very cool! The phone quality, features, interface and reception top the other brands.
Razr is less expensive since it came out almost 2 years ago.

I'm switching too! I'm looking at the crazer, the blackberries, SLVER (with i tunes), L2( no camera) and L6 (same as L2 but with camera). My phone is hecka old. I'm excited to get a new 1. good luck!

I have the w300i and it is an MP3 phone with a walkman. I love it.
