My 2 month old daughter appears to have 2 butt cracks. One small crack at the top of her normal one. The doctor always checks it out and mentioned something about it when she was born- but since her spine looked fine in her utero ultrasounds nothing more was done. I just want to know how common this is and if it goes away or if she will always have this?
At her last checkup the ped. said we'll keep an eye on it to make sure it's not due to her spine not fusing properly.

This worries me.

It may be a form of spina bifida called occulta. It is completely harmless. It is basically just a dent or cyst in the back, with no other effects whatsoever. You may also notice that there is more body hair on that one spot on the back, but in a 2 month old that probably wouldn't be too obvious. Something like 20% of the population has an occulta, and most of them never know it.

The two other forms of spina bifida are meningocele and myelomeningocele. These two can cause paralysis and many other problems. I'm sure you would have noticed paralysis by now though!

If the doctor isn't concerned, it's probably fine. Make sure he looks at it every time she is in the office, though, if it worries you. You can also google spina bifida occulta and learn more about it.

Don't let it worry you My son was born with the same then and now it is more of a dimple hidden in the crack and it doesn't look out of place at all since it lined up with the butt crack it looks a bit longer I guess but not really. My sister also had it and my mother never told her and so she didn't know till I asked her about it. I don't know why it is there but if it is not open and the spine showing threw it is fine. It may be something that runs in familys some have it some don't I don't know though.

Hey, I thought I was the only one! I didn't know there were others out there like me! Seriously, I have a sort of a dimple at the top of mine, although to my knowledge it has never required any medical attention or alarmed any doctors to any possible spinal problems. My spine is just fine. I hope your baby's is also just cosmetic. Really, I think it's kinda cute! But I agree that if your doctor is worried, you should get at least one more opinion. I hope it helps to know that there are others who haven't had any ill effects from it and good luck. I'll keep you and your baby in my prayers!

My sister had that and it was never a problem as a child. At the age of 23, she had a cyst pop out of it that needed to be surgically removed. My youngest also has this, so we were told to watch it as she grows older as she may too have the same thing. There is a name for it, but it is really difficult to pronounce let alone spell.

I'm not saying she will have this problem by any means, just what we experienced with a similar problem.

My son was born with this as well. It actually occurs when spinabifida starts to form but for whatever reason stops (thank God). It's not really a big deal. The Dr. said that it would never heal up but that my son should know about it because after he reaches adulthood a cyst could form. Hope this helps!! Feel free to message me!

I'm really sorry I cannot give you an answer on this... my only advise would be to get a 2nd opinion from another pediatrician. I wouldn't wait - if it is her spine they will need to take corrective measures soon, while she is still developing.

Good luck - I will keep you both in my prayers.

I wouldn't worry to much because if it was something serious then test would have already been ordered. I think since it's your child your worrying extra because you want your child to be healthy and perfect in everyway!!! But, If it bothers you that much then ask the pediatrician to order test or reffer you to a specialist!!!

I have never heard of this before. Did your doctor give you a name for this condition? If so I would look it up on the internet. Show your doctor you are concerned and get a second, third opinion until you are satisfied.
