As a Brit, I have been to RoI many a time - and never once been asked for my passport (I always go by ferry). I'm told I sound like an Australian, so similar might well apply to an American.

Are you talking about from Northern Ireland or from Eire?

If from Eire, yes they most certainly do as you are leaving one country and travelling to another. It will be checked when you check-in in Ireland and then again when you arrive in the UK...and be aware that the queues for non-EU passport holder tend to be quite lengthy at Heathrow & Gatwick.

If flying from Northern Ireland, probably not as, in theory, you are taking an internal flight. However I cannot be certain on this as I have never flown internally.

A be attentive to warning: whilst you are attempting to flow into the united kingdom "in the process the back door", on the grounds which you're barred from the united kingdom for some reason, it won't artwork. the united kingdom and eire share suggestions on deportations and personna-non-grata. in case you attempt to flow into eire from out of the country, the border police could have the entire info and additionally you would be refused get admission to to eire.
