Over thousands of years cats learned to cover their waste because it served a useful purpose of hiding their scent from predators. Covering the waste also prevents the spread of bacteria and disease to mother cat and her kittens. In the wild, only secondary cats bury their feces. The dominant cat proudly leaves his to show that is his territory. Domestic cats have the "courtesy" to cover their waste, because you are their higherarchy...You rule the roost, even though they know they can manipulate you to get that kitty treat they want...Dogs on the other hand, all think they are the big dog and will crap where they please and leave uncovered "presents" for you smell or step in.

That has nothing to do with it. Cat's are natural hunters and stalkers. They have the natural instinct to hide any trails of them being there. So they bury their mess. Out door cats will actually dig and bury as opposed to just covering up with kitty litter inside.

Hmmm...

I lost my beloved yellow lab Sandy last year. She loved me and I loved her. I miss her terribly.

I now have a cat - Charlie. He tolerates me and I tolerate him. Ever so slowly, we're developing a relationship. It's going to take some time, I'm afraid.

Cats and Dogs are different...you bet!
