I understand exactly what you mean..I have TWO sons, ages 1 and 7, (luckily their mother works 9-4:30 and I work second shift starting @ 3:30), and you want to work "normal" hrs because you miss out on a lot when you start @ 1:30 in the afternoon. For a single mom, i know child care can be a problem. It seems like certain job industries usually work on a flexible shift/second shift basis such as the medical field(except @ a dr office), retail, or hotel/hospitality(theres more) but in social work, clerical/administrative, insurance, banking, education, u MORE THAN LIKELY can get a 9-5 or 8-4 M-F. I guess people have to get a college degree and choose a career(even if we arent happy) that falls into those categories.

What about helping home bound people? Like elderly people who need looking after during the day while their family is working 9-5. Then you can be home after that.

Also, some child care centers would be happy to have you as a care giver. Then your kids could be with you.
