"All he did was fight in a war"? That counts for something....

He not only fought in the revolution, he died in it, at the battle of Savannah. He was a competent commander, and lead one of the few calvary regiments of the army at that time. He had a long list of achievements in Poland, too, before he even came to the colonies.

He was a Polish Revolutionary War hero.

I know this, because there was an elementary school katty-korner to my Catholic grammar school in Philadelphia that bore his name. This was at Sprague and Chelten Avenues in the Germantown area during the sixties.

The kids from that school would chase us home because we'd be suspended if caught fighting in our uniforms. Consequently, the public school district let them out 15 minutes after us.

This meant that staying after school included a long run home or a butt-whipping, or both.

Chicago has a large Polish population, so they embrace this "native son" of theirs that volunteered to fight on the american side in the revolution
