We have a small office. The receptionist has gone home sick - so I have been unable to take a lunch break. I am the only person in the office that has a clue about my specialty. Everyone else has left the his employ for one reason or another. Today, my boss has been handling the phones, but when several lines come in at the same time, I normally grab one to help out. When he talks to people, he either fails to pass the information along to me or tells them I am on another line when I am not. He just went off on me for answering the phone - and my first instinct is to say **** and start looking for a new job.

I would explain to him that you are trying to help out. If they aren't appreciative then look someplace else. I am only one of 2 people in the office that answers phones. I know how you feel!

Well I realize you are a working person gatekeeper. Are you in fear for your life...honestly now....when this person goes off on you? Do you feel he would possibly hurt you? If you do not think you can have an intelligent conversation with this person, then you should probably leave. If you think there is a thread of too much passivity on your part and that with some assertive measures you can take more control of how he treats you?, then hash it out with him. Most jobs are gonna have idiots, most people are idiots, having human moments. Your safety is primary though and if you have to relate in a shouting manner all day long or shout inside yourself, that is too much stress and unhealthy for you. Further understanding will require more info from you.

Have you considered that maybe your boss is more interested in you focusing on your job than on you answering phone calls? Try talking to him when he has a free moment, and ask him whether he even wants the help you are offering. It is possible that he is viewing you as more of a hindrance than anything else.

I would do what the boss asks of you.

Rule one - the boss is the boss
Rule two - see rule one

It's his office so let him answer the phones alone if he wants to. Gives you time to take your lunch break.

I think its time to find another way to bring in your income. At times like these your boss needs to be supportive not on your back or you will be the next to go off sick.

There are many ways to make money online so why not spend some time educating yourself and put yourself first.

talk to the boss and try to explain you are only trying to help out as you are shorthanded at the moment. and if he feels you should stay out of it, pls do. it is only a temporary thing. and if it gets worse and you can't stand it anymore, look elsewhere for another job.

Look for another job, but don't quit until you have one.
