Should I estimate what month I started/ended?
Or should I place a couple of question marks or X's?

Estimate don't put x's.

Don't you keep any records, such as copies of your tax filings. These can give you an idea of when you worked there. You can also call those past employers and ask if they have easy access to that info -- just month and year are OK.

And, now you know that you should start keeping track of things. You have a computer. So, go into word processing, make up a resume', and list the dates. As you change jobs, go in and update it.

I would usually list the years, such as "employed 2002-2006"

You can use the year, rather than the exact date. It is nice if you have a month also. Do not use x's or ?.

month and year, like 10/2006. Don't put ? or X.. it will stand out and make you look like an idiot.

Just put the years you was employed there.
