I just bought a 30 gallon fish aquarium the other day. I let it run its course for 24 hours before introducing new fish to the tank. Now it is cloudy. How do I clear it up? It has a new pump and filter and new gravel. I have washed everything, including the gravel before putting them into the tank. What can I do to get the cloudiness gone? Any help will be appreciated. This is my first "big" tank, I have had the 10 gallon tanks in the past and none have ever clouded like this 30 gallon tank. Thanks!

It is a freshwater tank and I did use dechlorinator when I first set the tank up. There's about 20 fish in the tank, but they are all small fish.

Cloudy water is a problem in any new tank unless you've cycled it first. Other people have indicated this in their answers, but they haven't given you info or sources where you can find out how to do this. Here are two good ones:

One day isn't enough time to build up the bacteria you need to deal with the wastes your fish are putting out. This process can take a few weeks to two months. It's discouraging looking at a cloudy tank, but don't give up - it will get clear!

Congratulations on the "big" tank!

Leave your tank alone! This is a beneficial bacteria bloom a very good thing. If you change the water or start adding stuff it may take longer to clear up or screw up the pH. It will clear up on it's own soon. Have fun with your new fish.

More information relly is needed. Is it freshwater or saltwater? Did you run any tests? What are the results? Did you de-chlorinate the water prior to puting the fish in the tank? It could be the de-chlorinator. That typically makes the water cloudy. Your water perameters could be off. Test your water and see what the results are.

It will need to "cycle". The tank should clear up in a few days.
If not, do some small water changes.
