As interesting as it is, there just isn't an answer to this question. We could sit and puzzle over it for centuries, and I don't believe we'd be any closer to an answer.
What you have to remember is that our experience of reality involves space and time. In order for us to know that you exist, you have to be spatially present (take up room) and to be following a timeline, even if it's brief - you have to have a past and present.
But before the big bang, there was no space and time. The singularity that went boom existed without taking up space and with no history or future. But we know it must somehow have existed otherwise how could we be here?
I think there are some things that are completely outside of human understanding (certainly at present) so we will never know. Sadly.

Before the Big Bang a chap sat at his computer and typed, before the Big Bang, what then ?? Some smart **** replied, Before the Big Bang, a chap sat at his computer and typed...ad infinitum. Of course there was space, always was space, everything has space, sometimes a crowded or totally jam packed space, but always space, space is what the `solid bits` occupy. Life is a huge recycling plant, using, losing, composting down, and Bang, the cycle starts again, and this question will continue to be asked to infinity. PS. God has nothing to do with it!

There this concept of singularity that says that there was nothing at all in the beginning, except this little dot, which was wicked small. Then it exploded creating Hydrogen and i think Lithium.
But i personally believe that the God did it all, and that is why the scientists can not find anything to explain the Big Bang.
There is a book called: "A History of Nearly everything" it will help u to understand it all.

one idea is that all the matter and mass in the universe was crushed into a little ball about the size of the tip of a needle.
I think that the big bang eventually runs out of force and starts going backwards condensing everything back again. If you believe in alternate universes picture this. take a piece of paper and draw a couple circles about the same size. pretend those circles are each a different universe. there about to colide as one expands it hits the other and makes it shrink then once the other one has a "big bang" the universe that was growing gets pushed back. now imagine about a million universes packed tightly toghther expanding and compressing.

Hi there,
This was always confusing to me too.
I recently read "The Fabric of the Cosmos" by Brian Greene (one of the world's foremost authorities on string theory and physics in general).
He said that the general consesus is that the big bang created our universe...but scientists have absolutely no idea what caused or came just before the big bang!

there was no space here, baby, but maybe there was someplace else.
like in a computer when you give the command Make New Folder.
You know it is said here were are in a virtual space of illusions.
now really, some guy came up with this theory that the structure would be something like a foam with bubbles where bubbles are new universes, in parallel layers(this comes from another theory)
of the multystrings. That's it.
Oh, and not to forget. This doesn't mean that we are little. We just play little.Lol.

All of the Universes matter was a tiny pinpoint, it exploded for some reason and has been expanding ever since, some theories are that eventually Gravity will bring everything back together and recycle the Universe again with another big bang

Time started at the Big Bang, The BB was the rapid expansion of space and time. If time started at the BB there is no "before" the BB just as there is no north of the north pole. You can ask the question but there is no answer because the question does not make sense even though you think it does.

youre correct.
even the most enthusiastic "big bang" scientists cannot explain how something came from nothing. the big bang never happened. the universe was created by God. But dont take it from me. go to www.creationinstruction.org. it is a very good website and will answer all of your questions about creation. After hearing the speaker's talk, i have no doubts that God is the creator.

well before the big bang the universe was simlar to tis, the thory is that after a certain amount of time the universe will stop expanding and start contrating leading to anoher big bang where the universe will spread out again and so on.... but originally no idea
