intransitive, transitive, ditransitive, complex, prepositional, intensive? I know the number of complements is a big factor, but I have a hard time in identifying them without digramming the sentences, and even then I get confused. Please give examples if possible! Thanks!

Intransitive verbs - describe a state of being or feeling
She *is* nice
She *looks* nice
She *feels* happy
She *appears* happy

Transitive verbs - describe an action of doing something
He *runs* each day.
I *took* a class.
I *think* a lot.
These do not describe what the subject is or is like,
but what the subject does.

Note: It seems "intensive" verbs also describe what the subject is or is like, and "extensive" verbs are what the subject does.

Ditransitive verbs - have two objects, direct and indirect
I *gave* the teacher a pencil.
(pencil - direct object, teacher - indirect object receiving it)
I *made* myself a sandwich.
(sandwich - direct object, myself- indirect object receiving it)

complex verbs - have auxiliary or helping verbs to designate past or future tenses
I *would have run* today.
I *had forgotten* my math.
I *will be finished* soon.

Prepositional verbs - have prepositions that cannot be separated from the verb and still have the same meaning
I *went after* the biggest prize.
I *believe in* world peace.

Diagramming sentences is good.
Start with memorizing 1-3 easy examples of each type.
Then compare other cases to those to recognize which type of verbs they are.

Note: I would take the large index cards, and make a card for each type. You can include definition, examples of verbs, diagrammed sentences, and any other notes that help you remember. Check with your book or your teacher to make sure these descriptions above match what you were shown in class. Otherwise check online and make corrections as needed.
