In all the pictures I have seen it looks like they are in direct sun light. Yet I read that we had to land on the dark side to avoid the 250f heat. Which is it? Not the sun, or not the dark side?

No. There wasn't any light to see where the ground was.

It is not the "dark" side of the Moon, it is the far side. All parts of the Moon face the Sun every month so they all get the same amount of sunlight.

There would have been a problem had the astronauts landed on the far side of the Moon - they would not have been able to communicate with Earth, the bulk of the Moon would have been in the way.

James Michener explored this possibility in his novel Space in which he had a fictitious Apollo 18 that landed on the far side. It is worth reading.

Hi. There is really no 'dark side of the moon' with apologies to Pink Floyd. Only Earth facing or non-earth facing. The Sea of Tranquility is on the Earth facing side.
