I own a 2001 Honda Odyssey. We only have 65K miles on it, and live in Norther CA. I only mention this because the Odyssey manual says to change out at the 60K mark for high temperature locations. I do not consider silicon valley as a high temp. location. I was wondering if there was anyone who might know if 75K is reasonable to wait for? The van is running great, and I keep up on normal maintenance, and the dealer never says anything, but they also just tell me when I inquire that the manual says 60K.

Any help or suggestions out there?
Thanks,
Gary

The timing belt is critical, and Honda pretty much only make interference fit engines. (I believe they have one non-interference fit engine in their engine line up).

Which means if the timing belt breaks... New engine is required.
Why play around with this? A timing belt replacement cost about $300. A replacement engine costs $2000.

If Honda recommends 60K, there's a reason for them to recommend it at 60K. They want to save you the money from having to replace the engine. You can wait if you want to what ever mileage you want to gamble with the working order of your engine. There are people that wait, but if you hang around this message board, you'll see a lot of people gambled and lost. The gamble of waiting is always up to you as an owner.

However, in my opinon bent valves and marred pistons are not worth not having your timing belt changed at the recommended interval.

Mitchell-on-demand recommends the timing belt be changed at 105,000 miles. Mitchell produces aftermarket repair manuals.
I'd split the difference and do it around 75-80,000 miles to be on the safe side, but definitely get it done as this engine is an 'interference' engine. (If you wait till the belt fails there will be internal engine damage which will cost a lot of money to repair)

If it is recommended in your owners manual and maintenance periods for that model, and if you don't do it when recommended, it could void your warrantee.

Don't take a chance, just do it.

Yeah 75k miles are fine, I've seen people who've never changed their timing belts, or just didn't know about it when they took it to the auto shop they changed it out, and sometimes they leave it after like 120k miles before they even suspect the timing belt needed to be changed...
