Biotic mean which has life in it and biotic material or biological derived material is any natural material that originated from living organisms. Most such materials contain carbon and are capable of decay.
Examples of biotic materials are wood, linoleum, straw, humus, manure, bark, crude oil, cotton, spider silk, chitin, fibrin, and bone.
The use of biotic materials, and processed biotic materials (bio-based material), over synthetics is popular with those who are environmentally conscious because such materials are usually biodegradable, renewable, and the processing is commonly understood and has minimal environmental impact.

Biotic factors in an ecosystem are the living or once-living components.
So biotic factors that affect a squirrel include:
-- predators like owls, hawks, coyotes, dogs, ...
-- food sources like walnuts, hickory nuts, acorns ...
-- shelter like trees, shrubs
-- parasites like lice, fleas, worms
-- competition like blue jays, ground squirrels, ...
-- other squirrels
Biotic factors do include parts of the ecosystem that were alive at one time: dead organisms, dead organic matter, wastes, ...
