Shouldn't he be smiling at this point? He had some problems at birth, and might be delayed, that is why I am nervously wathing everything he does or should be doing...

I understand how you feel. Keep in mind all babies develop differently. My daughter is 20 weeks now and I was looking for that smile from day one. She did not smile at that age. She did have smile reflexes in her sleep. I got response smiling when she was around 12 weeks. Now everytime I look at her she smiles. Relax.

Relax and enjoy what he is doing right now. You will go nuts looking for all developmental milestone signs.

My suggestion for you would be to get a developmental book (even the free Parents magazine has month to month developmental stages) that will give you somewhat of an idea on the different developmental stages that occur over the course of the first year. Pediatricians routinely follow the same guidelines and this is assessed whenever you take your infant in for routine check-ups. Because of the problems that occurred at birth, Im sure your babies physician is aware of the possibiblity of developmental delays. My advice to you is to make a list of concerns and take them to the office at your babys next checkup. I think reading a little information might help a little as well. All babies do develop at different stages, however there are guidelines that are looked at closely. In answer to your question, smiling can occur at any time now, and its not unusual for your infant to be 6-9 weeks old before smiling. Give it some time, and seek some professional reassurances.

Hi! Congratulations on the baby. First thing's first, you should really relax. Babies feed off your energy vibes -- not to sound like a hippie or anything, but it's true. If you are stressed, they get stressed. If you are worried, they get stressed. If you are sad, they get stressed. See where I'm going with that ... Anyway, my son really didn't smile until he was about six weeks. I wouldn't worry. Pretty soon one day, he'll just surprise you and give you a grin you'll never forget and that will melt your heart. You should be having a six-week check up with your doc. I'd take the baby with you and slip in the question if he hasn't smiled by then. See what the doc says. Good luck.

The vast majority of babies who are "smiling" at 5 weeks are not doing it as a specific response to someone or something, but as a reflex action. It may take up to 2 months until your baby smiles in response to your smiles, voice, etc. Don't worry! Your pediatrician will ask questions at each visit to help determine your baby's development. My pediatrician said that she doesn't get concerned about the responsive smiling unless the baby is over 12 weeks and isn't really responding to others.

My son is just 2 months, and it's only been the last few days I've been seeing a smile. He was born on Jan 1, and the first smile I saw at all (a very tiny one, by the way) was on Feb 22. I know that because I just put it in his baby book. Don't worry, it's normal. I just took him to the pediatrician and they said that's fine.

Your baby is not showing slow development because he is not smiling, and most likely when he does start it will not be something that he is conscious of but an automatic reaction like breathing and heart beating. Just wait these next few months will go by so fast that you will wish you were still waiting on that first beautiful smile!

I wouldn't worry about it. Like everyone else has said, each baby is different, and in his own time he will get there. Enjoy every second of this itty bitty stage, hold and love him as much as you can...before you know it he will be off to school...
You could always contact the babies doctor. They might be able to give you a better timeline...depending on the situation at birth.

Here is a webpage that has some interesting info on it. Remember babies can only see so far away in the newborn ages and it takes alittle bit for them to focus.. don't worry he is fine and he will be smiling before you know it all the time.. good luck.

Your baby is 5 weeks old, most babies don't smile till 2 months or more. Be patient, your baby is only 5 weeks old. Just new to the world.

Remember ur baby is not a book. My son took his own good time with all the development stages and today his is in university. Relax and love your baby everything in its own time. When u take the little one to the drs. speak to them and put your mind at peace. By the way with my daughter I kept away from all baby expert books and she is doing just wonderful at 18 .
