If it is a fan assisted oven it could indicate a gas leak on the supply to the hob (which presumably runs behind the oven), the fan could be pulling the gas through.

Turn off your gas supply at the meter and get a CORGI registered engineer to test your gas installation immediately.

sometimes a new appliance will make quite a smell during its "Burn-in" period. Basically, the oil used during manufacturing needs to burn off. Manufacturers recommend up to 4 hours sometimes.
If it is not new, it could also be something touching the electric heating elements- baked on food/ grease. Try taking all the removable panels out of the oven interior and wash them, and then wipe down the oven interior with a mild detergent. Scoop up any debris that might be laying in the bottom of the oven also.

Could it be something you've cooked in there previously?? But if you seriously think its gas, take NO chances it can be really dangerous if its a leak, only leaking gas smells not when its lit and burning. So get it checked out by a pro with a gas detector metre.

Are you sure it's just not because it is new? I don't see how you could be getting any gas coming on because they are separate items yes? Best to get it checked by a plumber who is Corgi registered to be sure
