The temperature of the prevailing westerly wind in Britain is maintained by the Gulf stream an Atlantic current that flows from the gulf of Mexico and gives us our temperate climate meaning cooler summers and warmer winters so that it seldom gets warm enough for sea bathing or cold enough for winter sports!

If you want to know how big an effect the North Atlantic Drift {not gulfstream} has on the UK, consider the fact that I live on the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isles of the UK, as North and West as you can get, next stop Greenland.
We have palm trees in Stornoway.
Now it's far from tropical, but it seldom gets sub-zero sat out here in the ocean and we got only 1cm of snow last year and none so far this year.
Compare this with New York which gets many feet of snow while it sits only as far north as Madrid. Get an atlas, check it out.
The prevailing winds are what drive the north atlantic drift so you're quite right, we have mild winters [compared to Newfoundland which sits on the same parallel] because of the winds.

We have a warmer winter and normal summer, not because of the wind, but because of the gulfstream.
Without this we would have a climate like Newfoundland.

by way of fact Moscow has a continental climate and Glasgow a maritime one. by way of fact of this Moscow is far less laid low with winds from the sea than Glasgow. those winds, and the proximity of the sea frequently, make it cooler in summer and warmer in wintry climate than it could ideally be. if fact be told, the warmth temperature of the Gulf bypass glide interior the North Atlantic, originating interior the Gulf of Mexico, makes Glasgow, and Britain frequently, warmer in wintry climate than everywhere else interior the worldwide to date north. for the comparable reason, the Western Isles (Outer Hebrides) interior the northwest of Scotland are warmer in wintry climate than London.
