I have an idea for a multi billion pound project, more or less from screatch to create over a period of 0 to 10 years. I have to recommend this idea direct to the Prime Minister and do not go for patent or Solicitor. How can I be sure that my idea will not be stolen by one of his office or who so ever will open my letter. Please suggest the best possible way to protect it. If my idea is implemented, what sort of reward, I should be asking? Shold I ask before of after sending him the idea. Please advise the best way.

You're sounding like a mentalist. Go to a Patent / Trademark Attorney or a Solicitor if you've got an idea you want to protect, otherwise anyone could rip you off. They'll also give you an idea whether or not it CAN be protected (a lot of ideas can't) and what sort of money you should be looking at for it. They'll also remain sworn to secrecy.

As you've guessed, it's impossible to send a letter to the PM without a bunch of underlings reading it first. They're a lot less safe than professional advisors, just look at the PM's office's emails in the news at the moment!

You can't protect an idea on your own - You have to seek advice from a solicitor. Patents are good for inventions only and obtaining the rights to them.

What you can do is go to a solicitor and ask them to draw up a legally binding cover document that outlines who the idea rests with, your contact details and the restrictions you wish to impose on anyone who comes into contact.

If you compose your own cover document like this, you are at risk of putting into it clauses which are deemed unreasonable, and you are then liable to have your idea "stolen" anyway as anyone can argue under the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 that they are not bound as the restrictive clauses imposed are too severe/ridiculous/bizarre.

You seriously need to consider seeking professional legal advice prior to proceeding.

depends on who you know, surely in your best interest it would be advisable to consult a solicitor. Failing that depending on the size of the project make several copies and give them to people whom you trust. Good luck.

I'm not sure that you can 'protect' an idea as such.

Look at it like this - so long as you know the 'secret', so it will remain. A secret shared is no longer secret. Trust no one.

Put your idea on paper then mail it to yourself. Don't open it when you get it. The post mark will serve as a legitimate date of your idea.
