The asteroid youre talking about is known as Apophis, a name for a greek? maybe egyptian god of destruction or something.

Initially this asteroid was thought to strike the earth in 2029, calculations were revised and its only going to make a near pass. This thing is still going to pass ridiculously close to the earth, like wet your pants were all going to die close. Somewhere around 40000 km, well within the moons orbit.

So were safe right? Not exactly. There is a small chance that if the asteroid passes through a certain region, called the keyhole, that it will perturb the asteroids orbit in such a way that when it comes back in 7 years it will strike the earth. This keyhole is only a few hundred metres across, and the chances of it passing through are one in tens of thousands. but if it happened then were all dead. So do we start spending money now to move it to make sure it doesnt? or do we wait to get better data so we know if it will do this? and risk it being too late.

While media hype is often silly. This asteroid still poses a threat. A 1 in 50000 chance looks small, but when that 1 is total destruction it gets people worrying.

the previous respondant gave a link to Spaceguard - good.

spaceguard was started in 1995 and has been tracking and plotting what are known as NEOs - near-Earth objects. What people don't realize is that before that, nobody knew what was out there. 20 years ago, nobody thought there was anything that could threaten the Earth.

Now we know, isn't that a better position to be in. You are far safer now because these people are plotting these things.

The fact is that the whole thing is hyped up by the media. There are some "close encounters' on the way, but there always has been. Now we know what's out there, and there is nothing that is going to hit the Earth in the foreseeable future.

Please read science facts and forget what you read in tabloid newspapers, what you see on Hype TV shows, and don't listen to doom stuff that you hear on the street.

NEOs move like clockwork - once you have plotted one, you can plot its course for next 1000 years.

You should be more afraid of the weather, as nobody has really got weather prediction nailed, as it doesn't work like clockwork - it is a chaotic system.
