I want this to be our family vacation of a lifetime, so we are staying at the Contemporary. "We", are my wife & I, a 7yr. old, and a 15yr. old. Anybody have any secrets to help make this more enjoyable & smooth? I've heard about the character meals & stuff, but which one(s) do you pick? I heard you might get free upgrades on tickets after registering, so I booked it with the base package, in hopes of that. Anyway of making sure I can get these? I already asked, and they said no, not right now, like they may have some in the future. How long should I wait before upgrading to the park hopper? Has anyone ever been given a free dining upgrade? How about the best place to get a guide, to try and "map out" our days before we get there? Anybody know the best website to get answers? There seems to be so many, which ones' are the best?
Alot of questions, sorry, but any help would be appreciated.

The first thing that you should have done is to but "THE UNOFFICIAL GUIDE TO WALT DISNEY WORLD" . This book costs about $20 and you would have saved that already. Disney is not in the habit of giving away or upgrading anything. Let me give you an example of how ridgid they are.
On a recent trip to WDW in Jan/07 we were eating at the Crystal Palace in the Magic Kingdom. The meal is a character meal with Pooh and the rest of the Hundred Acre Woods. A lady wanted to just quickly go in and take a couple of pictures. They told her absolutely not. The lady was visibly upsetand asked to see the manager. I thought it was pretty chincy myself. The manager came out and talked to her and it went like this. "Look, everybody in there are paying hundreds of dollars to have a nice meal and be able to see the characters. It wouldn't be fair to them to let you in for free and get the same pictures they are paying for.
The book will dispell a lot of myths about WDW.

I hope you and your family have a great vacation. Depending when you are going really depends on free stuff. Example--if you go during the busy summer months (June, July and parts of Aug.) expect no discounts. They discount to bring folks in during slow times--I am hoping for FREE dining--Maybe Aug. 29-September 30th--that is when it was last year. I think they announce that in May or June. If so, I will be taking my family back.
By the way, the Contemporary is nice but I like the value resorts just as well. We stayed at the Poly this past Jan. and I was not that impressed --you are hardly in the room to enjoy to outragous pricetag of the room. 500.00 vs 80.00---it is a no brainer to me.
I think I have been to about all the Character meals at Disney. I like Chef Mickey at the Contemporary Resort. It is so good and a lot of fun. DO NOT eat at the Garden Grill with Chip and Dale (Epcot) the food is sooooooooooooo bad!!!
The O'hana's breakfast with Lilo and Stech is really good also.

Disney offers several fantastic character meals. Chip N Dales' Harvest Feast at EPCOT's Garden Grill is a great choice for lunch! I also recommend 1900 Park Faire for breakfast or dinner. That rest. is located at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. If your 7 or 15 year old is a girl, she'll enjoy the princess breakfast buffet at the Norway Pavilion at EPCOT. And if your 7 year old likes the Playhouse Disney characters, they will love the character breakfast at Hollywood & Vine at the Disney MGM Studios.
Uprgrades don't happen often. If I were you, I would hold out until you arrive at your resort, just in case. You can always upgrade your tickets once you arrive at your resort.

As always, I recommend going to the Walt Disney World Resort website.
Has tons of information regarding the parks. If you register with them you can "map out" the stuff that is a must-do for your family.
