To Cristy, I wanted to message you, but your message options are disabled. =( I appreciated your comments. I don't believe that femininity nor masculinity are natural in a biological sense. ^_~ I'm composing a lesson and desired feedback for it so I posted this question. Also, good observation with the repressed sexuality comment!

To Fab,
Before I asked this question, I was writing an article called "elusive masculinity" in which one must define femininity or masculinity in order to define the other. There is not a universally accepted definition of either one, and there is no universal experience of either. Soft, is often a word many people think of when one asks them to describe femininity. However, with both femininity and masculinity, there are vast contradictions in traits used to describe them. (like soft and childbirth ^_~)

PS I would like to point out that "Feminine" IS a social behavior. ^_^

How about when someone threatens a Mothers' young ones--human, animal, or otherwise? I'm a b*tch on wheels when that happens, but I am also as feminine as ever.
Also, when a certain kind of females attack other females through gossip and vicious comments--nothing soft there, either.See the fashion industry, or Hollywood, or your local cafe, bar, or church.
I've driven across country twice, with kids, dogs, and belongings in tow--no room for a softy in my car.
I could go on and on,but I'll stop for now.
Good luck.

I'd like to preface this with the assertion that our culture's contrivation of 'femininity' is repugnant and unnatural.
That being said, selfless devotion isn't 'soft', but it is considered 'feminine'. Sexual repression is considered a feminine virtue ...

When she is very strong on principles, and will take no BS, but will completely defer to you if you have something to say or offer, not just resisting you as if the relationship between the sexes were nothing but a battle for control|

being feminine and being soft are not degrees of the same range.... a feminine woman is that one whose features are delicate, her skin is well taken care of, and she really takes care of her feminine side, which differientiates her from the rest of women and men... and being soft is more of a social behaviour.

I guess competitive gymnastics. Depending on what they do a lot of it does not look soft, but is still considered feminine.
