I have heard it said, that it is for several reasons :
* May seem threatening.
* may seem frightening.
* may seem challenging in as imagined (by the one who rejects), as a comment of superiority, which in reality IS NOT!
* May appear not to belong to the group or the majority, rather.
* may seem a subtle way of mockery.
Etc., Etc., Etcetera!!! The more the (!) points the more reasons which may exist for the rejection.

According to anyone interested in replying WHY, if you would - Simply reject WHAT you may judge unfamiliar, as so to feel the right to reject, What in all truth, rather than paranoia, imagination, habit or the unwillingness to further understand the source of what you've chosen to reject - shows through for its' harmless or curious or worthiness?
I find this rejection, without due exploration to be a common phenomena . . and yet, there are many times when the "unfamiliar" would help us move ahead, advance, call it what you will.
Interested and courageous people, respond.

I think that people fear the unknown, or at least most people do. Something that they're not sure about takes them out of their comfort zones which seems to always draw a negative reaction. I think that there is so much in this world that we can't control so we try to control whatever we can which means we miss out on allot of really good things. Not only that, but to many people are to wrapped up in their iPods and Blackberries to have stimulating conversation.

what i find is a fear of what is unknown... i have this fear... i dont know if this is the answer you are looking for... i actually dont really understand the question... i am just here to get the 2 points... :P

we as people can reject the "unfamiliar" because of the unknown surrounding it. we fear what is unknown because it is something we have no control over and therefore has the power to hurt us...

there are examples of this in everything... the dark for example...
if we are unfamiliar with what is in the dark, we can so easily reject the notion of going through it for fear of bumping into something unknown...
an unfamiliar topic of conversation can be easily passed up for fear of committing a faux-pas because of unknown factors....

it is those so determined to discover the unknown that would venture in the unfamiliar...

i am unfamiliar with this topic but i gave it a go to get the points... :P

I beleive when something is unfamiliar, we tend to move away from it, because it would require a change within us to adapt to it. And people are scared of change for many reasons. Maybe we feel we will be ridiculed. Maybe we feel we will be a failure at it. Or maybe we fear that the change that would have to take place within us would cause us to lose our current friends. An example is a depressed person. They have become comfortable with the feeling of sadness, and fear the change of becoming happy. It has become unknown to them, and they may fear that the change will bring out a new person that they will not like, or that their friends will not like, etc. Or someone at a party with unfamiliar people. Rather than take the opportunity to meet new people, in an unfamiliar situation like this, we tend to shy away from the experience, out of fear that we must change ourselves to fit in with this new crowd. I guess I am speaking of the unknown on more of a mental note. Fearing to take that unknown job, because it may change your lifestyle too much. Fearing leaving you partner and going out into the unknown alone, because you would have to adapt to the change of it. We feel the comfort in expecting things, knowing what is to come, so we already know how to handle each situation when it comes. People fear things like war, famine, death of loved ones, because it is unkown to them, and they fear having their lives changed drastically, because they don't know if they could survive the change. But if we lived for the moment, taking in change as it came, and learning to adapt to it as it came, we would be prepared for change always, and would be able to thrive in every situation we came across, good or bad.It would rid you of the majority of your fears, and allow you to always move forward in your life, seeing even the bad changes as only learning experiences.As for unknown things that are more physical, like the dark, deep water, etc., I suppose the fear of these things really does have to do with the ability to control the situation. We fear not being able to handle the situation correctly, resulting in injury. But if you rid yourself of that fear, you are relasing all blockers that may cause you not to see the situation clearly. If you release your fear of it, you can see the situation from an outside view, and will be able to know how to handle the unexpected situation to the best of your abilities. But the truth is, the unexpected happens all the time. To fear it is to set your self up for failure when one of those situations comes. Always expect the unexpected.You will be more prepared when the unexpected comes, and will be able to use the resources that are around you and inside you to your advantage, with a clear, confidant mind.

I find this to be the basic difference between so-called liberals and conservatives.
