My friend and his wife just moved back into town. They are currently unemployeed and broke. I have done what I could to help them and had them over for dinner and drinks over the weekend. The wife who I do now know very well went into my bedroom and took 50 dollars from my stash. I have known him for 16 years and he is a good man. I cant say the same for his wife. How do I tell him?

If you are 100% certain that it was her, invite them over again and say to her when they are both there: BTW, just let me know when you'll be able to pay back the $50 I loaned you. I know it's a little difficult for you right now. She'll either act like she doesn't know what you're talking about or say thank you. If she acts like she doesn't know what you're talking about, explain the whole thing. At this point, it's up to your friend. Either you've lost an old friend over $50 or you'll have added marital stress to an old friend who's already going through some troubles. Proceed at your own risk.

And you've also learned to keep things locked up when you have company no matter who it is.

Now you know why so many (master)bedrooms have locks on them. That's an expensive lesson as others have said, but tough considering who they are. I'd hesitate to mention anything directly, though if you are hanging out again soon, then I might drop some lines about how you'd love to help them out more, but are short on cash since then and look for a reaction. You have to be certain before you do anything for sure. That is a really tough call though. No easy answer. Best of luck.

Write it off as a very valuable lesson, but know that when you have them over again, keep all bedroom doors locked and put away any expensive knick knacks, etc. He probably will find out eventually, this probably isn't her first time, and he may already have some clues, he just needs time to face it, don't force him, just be there when he needs you. Good luck and God Bless.

I wouldn't tell him. You paint them as "desperate". Try to let it go and learn from it. Learn how to avoid letting her get into another situation where she could do it again.
