I would tend to agree in principle. Your premise is not totally universal however.

If you are talking about the United States, then I would reconsider what you are stating. Yes, the United States consists of earn and spend workers, but the population of the U.S. works many more hours per year than other industrialized countries. Immediate gratification is present, but you can't chalk up actions solely on individuals. You have to analyze actions and reactions of a social system to really understand WHY and HOW people are reacting to their situation. I feel that your question might be more appropriate in the psychology section, since you are more concentrated on individual "half assers" and "whiners." Remember, society shapes the way we act and interact with our environment, including our families, jobs, and money.

You hit the nail on the head. Immediate gradification is a huge problem in the US. I think it comes from thing like when you see a kid in the grocery store begging and begging for a candy bar. Mom says no so the kids cries and bam....he gets the candy bar!! Also when I think of immediate gratification I think of financing. 60 years ago people did not just go out and finance houses that are 3 or 4 times their yearly income. They saved and saved until they had enough money. You are right!!! Excuses!

Finally, someone who articulates exactly what ails our society. I definitely agree....we've been conditioned to think primarily of ourselves, never wait for anything, and want the quick fix for everything--weight loss, romance, money, you name it. I blame a number of things for this trend, namely advertising and retail. The power of our money has literally spoiled us rotten and the sad truth is that there is no going back.

I think we are society of people, who try to make reasons, come up with answers and battle each steps of our lives. If the human babies are born with experiences from their parents, we wouldn't have as much mistakes and learnings. But we are, afterall, only the humans. We all need to give ourselves breaks.

Unfortunately, that is the way American is perceived. We are lazy. Look at our ridiculous lawsuits and gambling problems.
