I own a shop, and I will agree with the answer about the trash in the tank getting into the fuel line. I would go to a parts store such as Auto Zone and have them pull the codes and see what the check engine light is all about. It may or may not be related to the running out of fuel, but it probably is. Once you get the codes, have them reset the computer, and it will probably be just fine. You have the OBD-2 system, and once a code is set, and the light turns on, you must have someone with a scan tool turn it off (reset the computer) or it will just keep burning.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

It is possible that when you ran low on fuel the pump sucked up some debris that was in your tank. This happens a lot especially with older model cars. Causing the flow of fuel to be interrupted. Even worse it can cause the fuel pump to go out to lunch.Just a few things to think about. There are other causes for this problem though.

The problem with junk being sucked up in the fuel just becasue you have run out of fuel is: the fuel pick up is already in the lowest part of the tank, if you had any or very much crud you would have picked it up long ago. I'm voting 02 sensor or egr, like the others the local parts house can help ya there. Good Luck

When the "SES" (service engine soon) light is visible on you DIC (driver info center) and it is solid, not flashing-this indicates the vehicle is safe to drive. When and if your engine light is flashing it is not recommended to drive the vehicle. When the SES light comes on it sets a diagnostic code, which can be properly Retrieved from any GM dealer by using a “Tech 2”. Also check the gas cap, because if it's not on tight the engine light will come on.

The fuel pump probably sucked all of the dirt from the tank into the fuel filter and now it's starving it for gas.

go to autozone. oreilly autoparts, advance auto etc they all do free diag checks. like the other 2 guys I agree it could be junk sucked up into the filter sock on the intank pump. Pull the pump replace the pump filter-sock. Also replace the inline fuel filter. flush injectors.
