Paddy's day is a week long festival Ireland. It's also a bank holiday weekend. We start the actual day off by bringing all the youngsters to the parade in the city centre, then they are sent home and the party begins. Basically we all meet up with our nearest and dearest and drink and dance the night away. There's none of this eating corned beef and potatoes cr*p to remember our ancestors, we dont drink green beer, we dont dye our rivers green, these are all american customs. Friends and family just meet up and have a laugh. We're Irish every day of every year, so theres no need for us to go wild on the whole Irish thing for one day. Paddy's day is just a week long party for us and a chance for Irish people around the world to celebrate who they are.

It is the feast day of the patron saint of the island. My cousins go to mass. We also get religious greeting cards from them, and I usually get a little something from one of them as I was named for St. Patrick. You are talking a small town in the western part of the country, and I'm sure the celebrations are more boisterous in Dublin and the larger cities.
