I am considering a trip to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and I am wanting some input from those that have been there before. What should I expect? Is it a good deal? Are there other vacations in the same price range that are better? Thanks in advance for the help.

Puerto Plata/Cofresi area is a great place to vacation. There are several all-inclusive resorts there. You can also look at Sosua and Cabarete. They're pretty close to Puerto Plata.

The resorts, staff at the resorts and all the DR people are amazing, friendly and happy to help you in any way. Truly, you will love your trip.

My personal fav of resorts is Sun Village Resort and Spa but there are others as well that will be great as well.

You might also try looking at TripAdvisor dot com for Puerto Plata and all the DR as well as DR1 dot com. Lots of good info on those forums.

Yes, the Dominican Republic is a great place to Vacation.

The weather is great all year long, the people are friendly and laid back, and the country is pretty safe.

It is not only great for the beaches and nice weather, but historically, its a place of great interest, of over 5 hundred years of history where you can find the first city ever built in the whole american continent, which is something a lot of people don't know.

The first street, first convent, First Cathedral, first sunclock, first University, a lot of things in America first took place here.

Puerto Plata is a great place to go, I've been there several times. It has really nice beaches and a variety of all inclusive resorts at a great price.

I've been to Punta Cana twice. It is the most beautiful place. It's not outrageously expensive, and I went to an all inclusive resort, which was good. I've never been to Puerto Plata, but I imagine it's beautiful also. The people are very nice, brush up on your Spanish though. It might make things a little easier. :)

I was in La Samana in january for 2 weeks... which is in the outter right side still on the atlantic ocean.... pretty primative..but nice fairly quiet catering to people mostly 50ish..no children

porta plata and punta cana are more for younger people , lots ot do and they have huge resorts with 3 buildings of 600 rooms... but if you like to fih and shop and have fun partying that is the places to go..

keep in mind that there is a malaria outbreak i and a dengy fever out break in the DR and check with the world health website for more information.. take lots of bug dope...go to a travel clinic and get your shots.. most people speak french or spanish and very little english.. so brush up on that..

but it is beautiful and you will have a great time

We just got back from Puerto Plata last week and had a fantastic time - beautiful country, great weather. We stayed in the Play Dorada resort and we would definitely go back!

I am Dominican and I go there all the time. It has amazing food, resorts, music, beaches, european monuments, etc. Go there but dont just hang out, learn about our country. Learn the history. We are the first official european settlement in the americas from spain. Our history dates back all the way to the 1490s. Make sure you visit la Zona Colonial.

The DR is a dazzling jewel in the Carribbean. It's glittering cities beckon hedonists from all over the world. It's also known as The Gateway to Haiti. You can't go wrong.
